Roofs are the outer most protecting layer on our homes. They are constantly exposed to the elements of sun, wind, rain, and other extremes such as hail and tornados. Roofs are typically rated to last 20-30 years with proper care and in ideal conditions. Obviously most homes are not in ideal locations and weather conditions are almost never ideal. Roofs can become damaged by storms (i.e. wind or hail) as well as exposure to the sun or constant shade. No matter the situation, roofs will need replacing with time.
Do you notice
A roof is an investment, and we want to make sure we help you make an educated and informed decision on the roofing material and type that you choose. There are several different types of roofing for residential applications each offering different levels of protection and appearance.
Roofs need to be replaced for two reasons typically.
(1) First, they have reached their age limit and have succumb to the elements of mother nature. A major sign of an aging roof is granular loss. You will begin to notice that your shingles appear to have less and less granule on them. One way to tell this without physically being on the roof is to check your gutters or at the end of your downspouts. You will notice a collection of granule in one or both of the locations, which will tell you that your roof is aging.
(2) Second, a roof will need to be replaced because it has sustained storm damage. Most times a homeowner doesn't know their roof has been damaged from a storm until a leak develops. High winds and hail damage roofs regularly, and most of the time it goes unnoticed. If a storm comes through your area and you see the tree blowing very hard and leaning side to side, that is a sure sign that your roof has possibly sustained damage. If a 2-3 ton tree is being blown around by wind, your little shingle are most certainly flopping around up there. Hail as small as 1/2" can damage roofs causing exposure to the elements. If you are at home and you hear loud bangs on your roof or metal siding/gutters, you are probably experiencing hail. Gutters and downspouts typically give away hail damage on a roof, as well as the mailbox. If there are dings on them, then your roof has more than likely been damaged by hail.
